History
Bassano del Grappa is a historic city in northern Italy’s Veneto region, situated at the foot of Monte Grappa. The city’s origins date back to Roman times, but it gained prominence during the Middle Ages. The powerful Ezzelini family ruled the town in the 13th century, followed by the Republic of Venice from 1404 to 1797.
The city’s name was officially changed to Bassano del Grappa in 1928, honoring Monte Grappa’s role as a battlefield during World War I and the local production of grappa, a traditional grape-based brandy.
NOTE: Grappa is an Italian spirit, specifically a pomace brandy, made from the solids (skins, seeds, and stems) left over from winemaking. It’s distilled from this pomace, creating a spirit with a distinct flavor, often described as a mix of sourness and honey sweetness
Geography
Located at the foothills of the Alps, Bassano del Grappa sits along the Brenta River, approximately 65 kilometers from Venice. The city’s position at the entrance of the Valsugana Valley makes it a strategic point between the plains and the mountains. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, vineyards, and the dramatic backdrop of Monte Grappa.
